this will be a belated friday night update.

i spent friday night hanging out with my friends and my english teacher and his wife. yes, you read that correctly. on friday night i watched a movie with deto, jenn, keena, mr.wallach, and mrs.wallach.

the graduate was playing at the paramount theater, and wallach suggested we go see it since we just finished watching and analyzing it in class. that way if we saw it at paramount we'd understand all the camera stuff and all the subtle jokes. so me, deto, jenn, and keena went to the paramount theatre in oakland. and let me tell you that place is GORGEOUS. it's not a normal movie theater. it has one huge screen (bigger than regular theatres but not AS big as an imax) and stadium type seating. it has three levels and on each level there are couches and chairs to sit and chat before/after the show. the theater is like an old-fashioned theater down to the food and drinks. they don't have huge popcorn bags, but they have tiny bags of popcorn with minimal butter. and the only snacks are the type of snacks movie theaters originally had: like junior mints and licorice. the drinks are served in small plastic cups with a little red straw to sip with.

the place is absolutely wonderful. we spent about an hour wandering the theater and sitting on all the couches and chairs. they also have a powder room....it's a room with mirrors all around and chairs in front of each panel. there are heck of more lounges where you can just sit and chat in addition to the couches in the corridors.

now it gets interesting. me, jenn, deto, and keena were in the lobby when we see betsy and her bf.

betsy: the weirdest thing just happened
us: what?
betsy: we just had dinner with mr.wallach and his wife
me: just the four of you?
betsy: yeah...apparently he thought we were all a big group so he got a table for six at pho 84.
us: awwwww
deto: i feel so bad, he thought we were going to eat dinner with him.
jenn and keena: if i known he'd thought we were coming i would've gone to dinner
me: yeah me too. so what'd you guys talk about?
betsy: i dunno school

and this whole time, her bf (chris) is just standing there looking all weirded out. it's like a twisted meet the parents thing. hahaha.

then after betsy went to go find seats, mr.wallach came with his wife! so he comes over to us and introduces all of us. from the introductions i noticed that mr.wallach must talk about us (his students) a lot. cuz he introed deto as the guy who went to stanford for his new journalism paper, he pointed to jenn and keena and said they were the csf officers, and he introed me as the girl who went to A.C.T. theatre. so we were all just standing in a circle talking with mr.wallach.

so wallach left to find his seats then after getting our food we went back and lo and behold wallach and his wife were right next to us. haha. go figure.

even the movie starts off like an old fashioned movie. at 8:00 they start this raffle. they spun a wheel and read the number the wheel stopped on and the person whose ticket had that number had to get up and shout "DEC-O-WIN!!!" and they won a gift certificate to a restaurant or store. hahahaha. fun stuff =D. then we wtched the news reel cuz before there were televisions people got their news from the beginning news reel of movies. so we watched the news.....from like the 1940s or something. then we watched tom and jerry.

and THEN The Graduate started. it was pretty funny cuz during the whole movie me, jenn, deto, and keena were making comments like "montage. wide angle. dutch angle. it's in the third. he's telling the truth. existentialism. he's all alone." mr. wallach heard us saying all that and he started laughing. what a way to apply our english skills =D.

after the movie we were going to grab a bite at wendys but when we told wallach he freaked, and told us not to eat the garbage. instead he told us to go to jack london square. so we went to the starbucks in jack london square, drove back to fremont, got some macdonalds, and i konked out in bed at around midnight. what a fun night hanging out with my english teacher.

if you really stopped to think about it like "i'm hanging out with my english teacher on a friday night"....yeah it was weird. but if you didn't think about it, it was pretty cool. cuz wallach is fun to talk to, and he's just as entertaining as he usually is in class. wow....karina's right. in her words, "you know you're a true nerd when you and your friends spend friday night *hanging out* with your english teacher and his wife."
